 HEALTH DEPARTMENT FURLOUGH NOTICE:

The Columbus Department of Public Health and healthcare providers across the community are preparing for the 2012 Health Expo.  The Health Expo will be held on February 4^th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Columbus Trade Center (801 Front Avenue).  This is an annual event where people in the region can learn more about their health status by getting over 40 free health screenings. 

 The Columbus (Muscogee), Clay, Crisp, Macon, Marion, and Schley County Health Departments in the West Central Health District, including the WIC Program, will be closed on Thursday, December 22nd and the employees required to take a day off without pay due to budget cuts. 

 Out of more than 600 state and local Safe Kids Coalition Coordinators throughout the United States, Christy Hubbard, Coordinator of Safe Kids Columbus, GA, was recently recognized as ‘Outstanding Local Coordinator,’ one of the coveted Safe Kids Champion Awards.

 World AIDS day is celebrated on December 1^st each year and has become one of the most recognized international health days and is a key opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of getting tested, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention services.  Early HIV diagnosis is critical.  HIV counseling and testing enables people who are concerned about their HIV status to take steps to protect their own health and that of their partners.  It also helps those who test negative get the information they need to stay uninfected.

 On November 17, 2011, to heighten community awareness and promote lead safety and prevention, Lead Safe Columbus will be conducting door to door home lead screenings in a Columbus neighborhood. 

Nearly a quarter of a million children living in the United States have blood lead levels high enough to cause significant damage to their health, estimates the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), based on data from a national survey. If high blood lead levels are not detected early, children with such high levels of lead in their bodies can suffer from damage to the brain and nervous system. They can develop behavior and learning problems (such as hyperactivity), slowed growth, hearing problems, and aggressive patterns of behavior.

The Columbus Department of Public Health will host a “Roll Up Your Sleeve Flu Vaccination Press Conference.”  Community Leaders will set the example by Rolling up their sleeve and getting a flu shot.
