Columbus, GA – Beverley A. Townsend, MD, MBA, FAAP has been appointed as the new District 7 Health Director by the Department of Community Health Commissioner, David Cook, and the State Health Officer, Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald.  The sixteen local county Boards of Health in the West Central Health District accepted the appointment made by Cook and Fitzgerald.

 

Dr. Townsend mastered two disciplines, medicine and business.  Her medical education began when she attended Jackson State University obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry; she continued her studies at Purdue University earning a Masters in Science Degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology.  She moved forward attending the University of Mississippi School of Medicine earning her Doctor of Medicine Degree.  She completed her residency in Family Medicine at the Department of Family Medicine in Columbus, GA.  Her second discipline was complete when she earned her Master’s of Business Administration at Kennesaw State University.

 

Dr. Townsend’s career has progressed and evolved from humbled beginnings.  She has served as a Staff Physician at Central Alabama Health Center, a Solo Private Practice Physician in Talbotton and Buena Vista, GA, a Medical Director at the Community Health Center of South Columbus, and lastly held a solo Private Practice at the Family Well Care Center in Columbus before accepting the appointment as District 7 Health Director and the Columbus Commissioner of Health.

 

Dr. Townsend practiced Family Medicine in the Chattahoochee Valley area for nearly twenty-five years.  She has served on numerous professional societies including the American and Georgia Academies of Family Physicians and the National, Georgia State, and Columbus/Ft. Benning Medical Associations.  She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice. 

 

Dr. Beverley A. Townsend leaves behind a practice comprised of patients who adore and respect her, regard her as an outstanding diagnostician, and an empathetic engaged confidante.  She proudly accepts her appointment as the Muscogee County Commissioner of Health and District Health Director for the West Central Health District. 

 

Through her work in Family Medicine, Dr. Townsend developed a strong passion for community health. While she enjoyed seeing patients personally, she looks forward to working to better the health of all individuals in West Central Georgia.
